Enough Room for everyone to succeed!
Whenever I think of the above statement the first thing that comes to mind is the MPESA.MPESA agents are on every street corner and new others pop up daily yet no one yet none of them think the other is a threat. The world is an oyster and everyone can and should win, some more than others definitely but we all get to win. However, there is need to be creative if we are to survive in this competitive business environment.A company like Coca Cola for instance can seat on its laurels and enjoy the longevity of its brand in the market but instead it’s pumping a reasonable percentage of its budget in advertising and re inventing itself.
That is Coca cola a world renowned brand. Then there is the rest of us that are just getting started. How in the world can we compete with such big corporations? But then again who says we have to compete?Truth is we do not. When we look at all things in the light of competition, it is easy to get immobilized into inactivity and discouraged. We need to focus on what we have to offer and build on that.

Customers for every business
Sometimes no matter how good a service is, there will be customers who prefer something else. Not necessarily better or worse than the other, just different. What am I saying? It is a great disservice to oneself and to the potential customers to not venture into a business on reason that everyone is in the same business.

You are a match for the competition and its a match for you
I don’t think there would be any innovations or need for creativity if not for competition.Competition is the driving force behind the success of every business. It should not be looked at as a threat, as a matter of fact we should embrace it and use it to make us grow and propel us forward. On the same note,we should not invest too much of our time and energy looking over our shoulders at what the next guy is doing that we lose focus on our game. What we are supposed to do and focus on is US and bettering our business and improving our craft and let the rest take care of itself.

Stealing clients never pays off
As they say ,all is fair in love and war and business most times is war.Survival for the fittest.I know some businesses like insurance necessitates that one either stops insuring with one to insure with the other. However, I do not think “stealing clients” ensures sustainability in any business. It’s like a pastoralist forcing sheep to eat from certain pastures that may or may not be appealing to them. What the former is supposed to do is focus on making the pastures green and appealing the sheep and automatically they will come.

Learn on the daily
Lazy readers shouldn’t be lazy listeners. Not everyone likes to read. Whichever way you learn, do it consistently and as often as possible.Growth doesn’t come but by learning. Some learn best through mistakes and we have had a fair share of lessons instilled in us by such means. We should not be afraid to make them, they are part and the best part of our growth.

Separate the business from the owner of the business.
Business is an entity and one needs to separate the business from its owner.A neighbour of mine ran his kiosk to the ground because all his household supplies were obtained from it and never accounted for.One of the people I look up to-Richard Branson was making millions but still leaving off of other people’s pockets. Now many would think he was being miserly or a hippie as many know him to be, but he knew to separate the two entities. The likes of me find that unfathomable! We are used to raising the standards of our lives in proportion to our incomes and complaining that money is never enough.

Re-invest back into the business.
A friend of mine passed by his uncle’s fridge repairing business and was wondering why after over 30 years the owner has not taken up the entire street and doesn’t have ten branches across the country. I told him that may not be his plan and maybe he wants the business to be small and manageable.I didnt really believe that and I am yet to meet a person who does not want to grow his business.
The whole point of having a successful business is so one can enjoy the good things in life. However the latter should not come before the former. One should re-invest back into his/her businesses until it gives him/her the lifestyle that they want. And of course someone from my village will come up with a question like.“What if I die before living in that good house whilst busy re-investing back into my business?’.And my answer would be, you will die anyway.

Have fun and stay in your lane
Make sure you are having fun doing life and that includes work. People who are not having fun tend to compartmentalize life into, work, play, kids,mother-in law, vacations, weekends etc.One of my favorite scriptures say “whatever you find to do, do it with all your might”.According to this statement, we first have to do the finding before the doing. In other words our first job on this earth is to find out what we would do with all our might and the rest will just take care of itself. We wont have to work up any enthusiasm for it and we will always be excited to wake up to do it everyday. With that said, have a great life and live it to its absolute fullest!

The rave reviews from the first blog post The Power of Starting has prompted me to continue on the same subject. Since many have the WHY part covered, I thought we should try tackling the HOW.One person commented that it is the HOW to start doing that which they are purposed to do especially when one does no even know what it is, that is a challenge.I am not really an authority in this and whatever I am going to share may not necessarily be applicable to you; but read on.I promise you will be enticed.

For the longest time, I did not know what my purpose in this life was and it did not bother me.It was when I began to feel deep dissatisfaction towards my job that my search for purpose began.Like me, there are many who go about life blindly bumping into what IS NOT before finding what is.The important thing is to start and continue the search until you find it.One of my favorite fiction authors, Nora Roberts says about her search“I tried knitting, baking, sewing everything to fill that void only writing could”.Even Nora had to kiss several frogs before finding that Prince!

God has deposited in you everything you need (purpose, gift, resources) to live the life of your dreams.Your job is to align that purpose with your gifts and build a set of skills around them to enhance and propel you forward. Sometimes our purpose comes to us as an idea, not necessarily a brilliant one. However instead of executing it, we tend to come up with all sorts of reasons as to why it cant work. Someone else comes along and executes the exact same idea and we begin to wish we had too upon seeing theirs flourish.Do yourself a favor today and start executing the idea you have been seating on.But what if it fails you ask. Well, what if it succeeds? Ever thought of that? And even if it fails, you have still succeeded against the enemy called procrastination- and that is the first step towards success.

Whats in your heart?
Not everyone has a very obvious gift like Beyonce and Lupita Nyong’o. Some are gifted at not being gifted(kidding!).Everyone is gifted at something.God made sure of that.No one was sent on this earth to do nothing (read on Nick Vujicic and every doubt you had about yourself will ebb away). However, no matter how good you at your job/work , if it is not aligned with your purpose and your gift, you will never be fulfilled. It might also take forever to get that corner office and when you do, you will not be able to shake off that feeling of being in the middle of everything and being surrounded by nothing.Do what’s in your heart and you wont have to look back and wonder if you made the right decision.

What if doing what is in my heart cannot sustain me?
Everything if done super enough can be monetized! You mean even watching series?Yes, even that. You can always sell the DVDs afterwards or better yet open a store that sells them.

What comes naturally to you?
Getting out of a comfort zone has often been misconstrued as doing that which is hard to us.That which does not come naturally to us. Nothing can be further from the truth. No one has ever really succeeded by doing something they weren’t wired for. That is not to say one can not succeed at anything they set their minds to do, evidently humans ( and a few animals) have proven time and time again that it is possible.I personally hate numbers and my brain refuses to articulate anything numerical besides my age and income. However, I was the best student in Commercial subjects in Form 2.Well, I had to choose between sciences and commercial subjects and the latter was the lesser of the two evils. While I had to mobilize every fibre of my body to complete a sum, a left-brain dominant person like my friends Glory and Doris could do it in their sleep. TD Jakes once said on Oprah “A speaker can serve the purpose of a chair. However that is not what it was designed for.If the owner therefore decides to use it as such, it will eventually malfunction”. It’s the same with us humans, you cant rise above mediocrity if your functioning outside your purpose.

If you did not have bills to pay, what would you do?
Okay, do not tell me you would be eating and sleeping and watching series after series. Even that gets boring after some time.If you do not know the answer to the above question, your job is to find that out. Otherwise you will be wondering aimlessly through life!

What do you spend most of your time doing?
No, I am not referring to that job you hate so much. What you do in your spare time? Yes, spending quality time with boo is one but what else?Do not tell me,thats for your to know.

Here comes the big one….

What do you most look up on the internet?
That too I do not want to know but just so you know, it says a lot about your natural inclinations and what your mind gravitates towards. Our lives is a reflection of our minds. Therefore if you are feeding yours junk, it should not come as a surprise to you that your life is just that!

You need to unlearn old beliefs about work.
Many go through motions of life instead of living, others are living the same year 75 times and calling it life. It would help if the year was not so mundane. You are not born to pay bills, take out loans to keep up with the Jones, service those loans and die. There is more to life than that. My mom always says, anything placed at the wrong place is rubbish no matter how beautiful. If you are in entertainment industry watching a film is not a waste of time. If you are in hospitality industry checking a new restaurant is not a waste of your time. However, if carpentry is what keeps you awake at night, and you are in a white coat with a stethoscope hanging over your neck busy playing doctor, you are being rubbish. You are not only wasting time, you are wasting life. Quit being rubbish and start living your truest, most authentic form of yourself. You only have one life, please make it count!

Most people procrastinate, paralyze themselves into inactivity by over analyzing situations. They want to wait until all or most conditions are right before doing anything.Truth is,there is really no such thing as the perfect time or perfect conditions to do anything. The is only time to do what you want with what you have. Some have more than others to start with but not even that matters. What matters is  that THEY START!

So many are very unfulfilled in their jobs and lives. I was one of the many not very long ago.I considered and on somedays did more than consider calling in sick. My life became a game of what excuse I could come up with to not go to work.It got to a point where not even the salary meant anything to me, not that I was being paid much. And my performance wasn’t exactly impressive. I had become the epitome of mediocrity. Les Brown better describes it as “Working just enough not to be fired and being paid just enough not to quit”.

When the environment got too toxic, I could barely stand it, I decided to START paying attention to what was in my heart. Somehow it knew better the direction my life should go than I did.The first thing I had to do was to unlearn/ tune out negative reports about myself. These negative voices are:

  1. I am not good enough( I do not have enough experience, am not old/young enough etc).Surprisingly,a few people believed in me so much I had no choice but to start believing in myself. My mother for one, believes I can beat Hillary Clinton in the upcoming American Presidential elections( it doesn’t occur to her I need to be American to even attempt that!).The baseline is, you need to get people/a person in your corner who believes in you so much so you have no choice but to believe in yourself. And if you cant find them, be that person.
  2. The bills are not going to pay themselves: I realized that I was the one who was creating those bills and could easily uncreate them.So I did. I cut everything down to food, shelter(basic one at that) and clothing .
  3. It’s not that bad!In other words, I got accustomed to feeling unfulfilled and it became the norm for me. There is no worse death than that, to die while still alive.
  4. I do not have enough resources:Not even Bill Gates has enough of this. One person once said, if it’s not one thing,it’s the other so one can never have all the resources one needs.

I believe everyone, especially successful people have battled one or all of the above feelings  at some point in their lives. How then did they go on to be successful? I am currently reading a book by Donald Trump and could quote him as his take on this resonated with me. I am not quite sure though that’s a good idea at this particular juncture. However, I can can speak for myself.
I have learnt that the only way to conquer these insecurities and fear is to DO THINGS AFRAID.

I figured I am never going to feel fully confident in anything and I can either seat on the sidelines and watch people live their best lives while I complain about mine or do whilst afraid. I opted for the latter and guess what I discovered? I am still way ahead of many people who are marking another day of not doing anything towards fulfilling their dreams.

Let me be clear on one thing, this is not a call for people to give up their full time jobs and venture into the unknown.I know what huge leap that is. This is a call for people to just START.To start doing that which makes their hearts glad( it better not be watching series!), that which make them lose track of time and most importantly that which they were put on this earth to do. Start doing it for five minutes everyday then increase that to 10 and before you know it you will be doing it all day, everyday! I dare you today,to START.
